USB Bluetooth adapters - why are they still needed?

All currently produced laptops, as well as many desktop computers and single board minicomputers (e.g. Raspberry Pi generation 3 and 4) are equipped with integrated Bluetooth module, allowing connection with devices such as wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, stereo audio sets, headsets, teleconferencing accessories, pointing devices or all kinds of wearable electronics. However, there are still many "PC" models and budget versions of SBC minicomputers that lack wireless connectivity in this popular standard - this situation applies to many older devices as well as some new designs. In such cases, a Bluetooth adapter for the computer will come to the rescue - a small device about the size of a flash drive or - very often - even smaller, with dimensions indistinguishable from a "nano" type wireless mouse receiver. What is important, USB adapters work not only with Windows systems, but also (in many cases) with various Linux distributions, which is of great importance for a wide range of open source operating system users. Nothing stands in the way of connecting a portable computer equipped with Bluetooth USB adapter to the car radio - of course, beforehand you should make sure that your car radio supports wireless communication (you can also get a suitable adapter with audio output).

Bluetooth USB adapters for classic applications

In our offer we have included different many types of Bluetooth adapters which plug directly into USB port of the computer. Depending on the required connection standard, you can choose between models compatible with Bluetooth 2.0 and modern adapters supporting data transmission to/from low-power devices in Bluetooth 4.0 BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) standard. One of the first group is an inexpensive, miniature module from Esperanza, EA159, which is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 as well as with Linux distributions used in Raspberry Pi minicomputers - on the product page you will find a link with a description how to install the drivers in Raspberry Pi operating system. We also recommend the BLED112-V1 long-range BLE module and Asus USB-BT400 branded Bluetooth USB adapter, also supporting Bluetooth 4.0 BLE standard. We also have dedicated Lego WeDo 2.0 adapters, allowing you to connect your computer to the robot controllers of the world-famous manufacturer of building blocks for children and teenagers.

Bluetooth USB adapters for special applications

At the Botland store, you'll also find two special Bluetooth USB adapters designed for prototyping and evaluation applications. Bluefruit LE USB Friend by Adafruit is a small board with Bluetooth BLE module, controlled via USB-UART converter by FTDI. This solution enables simple communication from the level of almost any terminal program, working under one of the operating systems supported by FTDI chips. The module is seen in the operating system as a virtual serial port (COM), and you can use AT commands to control it. On the other hand, Bluefruit LE USB Sniffer module allows "eavesdropping" on the Bluetooth 4.0 BLE connection, which is of great importance for people debugging applications using this ubiquitous and modern wireless communication standard.
