Drivers of modern BLDC motors

A brushless DC electric motor (BLDC motor), also known as an electronically commutated motor or a synchronous DC motor, is a synchronous motor that is powered by direct current through an inverter or a switching power supply. The latter is a special brushless motor controller that generates AC electricity to control each phase of the motor via a closed-loop feedback circuit. Such a controller delivers pulses of current to the motor windings, controlling the speed and torque of the motor.

The advantages of brushless motors

The advantages of a brushless motor over brush motors are mainly the high motor power-to-weight ratio, the high speed and the possibility of electronic control with a brushless motor controller. As a result, BLDC motors have a high torque that is independent of speed. Conventional DC motors with brush commutation only reach their nominal torque at full speed. BLDC motors are used in devices such as computer peripherals (disk drives, printers), handheld power tools and all types of vehicles, from electric powered model aircraft (mainly drones and quadrocopters) to electric cars. Thanks to the use of dedicated controllers, commutating the phases on the individual motor windings, it is possible to use very advanced algorithms to control motor operation.

Complex control of brushless motors

Because brushless motor controllers are intended to function as a replacement for traditional brush motors, they need information about the position of the rotor relative to the stator coils. Some designs use Hall sensors or a rotary encoder to measure rotor position directly. Others measure the back EMF in the motor windings that are not currently energised to determine the rotor position, eliminating the need for separate Hall effect sensors. It is because of this fact that they are often referred to as sensorless controllers.

Modelling applications for BLDC motors and dedicated controllers

Brushless motors are popular in flying models and drones. Their favourable power-to-weight ratio and wide range of available sizes have revolutionised the electric model market, almost displacing other motors. They have also encouraged the development of simple, lightweight electric aircraft models. The increased power-to-weight ratio of modern battery and brushless motors allows models to climb vertically instead of gradually climbing. Current brushless motor controllers on the market often have additional features dedicated to integration with the flying model, such as an interface to a radio control system.
