What are smart textiles?
Smart textiles, also known as e-textiles (electronic textiles), are materials capable of picking up and analyzing a signal in order to respond to it in an appropriate way. They can therefore be described as textiles capable of automatic reaction by adapting to their environment. These textiles can incorporate not only computer, digital or electronic components, but also innovative polymer materials such as shape memory polymers or chromic materials with color changing properties, as well as fibres and materials. Applications for intelligent textiles can be found in the fields of clothing, furnishings as well as technical textiles. Intelligent textiles for clothing or intelligent clothing are part of the broad field of wearable technologies. On the other hand, the field of fibertronics explores how electronic and computer functionalities can be integrated into textile fibres.
Materials and tools for smart clothes
Creating smart textiles is a more complex process than for traditional clothing. First of all, they consist of pieces of fabric which have to be properly cut and sewn together. However, in addition, they are also made up of electronic components equipped with appropriate drivers. In this way the textiles gain new functions, such as lighting, colour change or internet connection. It is worth remembering that smart clothes cannot be made of standard fabrics, because they cannot work with electronics. For this purpose, special materials and conductive thread are used to produce intelligent clothing.
