WiFi overlay for Arduino

Gone are the days of expensive, complicated to use radio modules, supporting wireless communication with computer networks. Today, due to the phenomenal market success of the Espressif ESP8266 chip, implementing WiFi on Arduino platform is almost as easy as with most of the Arduino Shield overlays.

The ESP8266 WiFi Shield overlay for Arduino - SparkFun WRL-13287 has the size and connector layout of a typical Shield series overlay, but additionally provides the user with a number of additional GPIO lines, supported by the transceiver itself (which, de facto, is also a pretty powerful microcontroller).

SparkFun WRL-13287 overlay parameters

The cap comes in a form of printed circuit board without any connectors installed - thanks to that, you can decide yourself what type of sockets you want to install. The module does not require external antenna - although its connection is possible due to presence of u.FL socket, it may be also used with microstrip antenna, made as a specially shaped path, cleverly placed in protruding part of the board.

It's worth noting that the operation of modules based on ESP8266 using Arduino is a pleasure - all thanks to a special library called ESP8266WiFi. It simplifies the implementation of network functions, such as HTTP client, which automatically sends certain data packets to the server.

Arduino Shield overlay with ESP8266 module

The ESP8266 chip is the undisputed winner of the technology race that has been taking place in the WiFi module market for over a dozen years. Easy operation, high capabilities and a very attractive price make the ESP8266 is eagerly used both in amateur applications and commercial products.

The ESP8266WiFi Shield overlay for Arduino - SparkFun WRL-13287 allows simple application of this popular chip for communication between Arduino board (e.g. Uno, Mega 2560 or Leonardo version) and any mobile device, computer or network router.

Software support for the ESP8266 WiFi Shield overlay

For convenient and intuitive use of the ESP8266 chip with Arduino there is a ready-made library called esp8266wifi. It supports all the necessary steps to connect to a computer or server - from connecting to an existing WiFi network (or creating a new one in Access Point - AP mode), through diagnostics of the connection status, to bidirectional data transfer to/from the module.

What is important, there are also additional libraries available, implementing support for the most important network protocols - e.g. HTTP. The ESP8266HTTPClient library is used for this purpose, allowing you to transfer a short message to the server and receive a reply from it (e.g. using the GET method, i.e. transferring data explicitly in the form of a string after the IP address or server domain name).
