Reading time: < 1 min.

On the 19th of October 2019 at 4 PM CET at the Maker Faire Rome event, Massimo Banzi and Luca Cipriani presented the newest edition of Arduino Pro IDE in its alpha form.

The simplicity and approachability of Arduino IDE made it one of the most popular programming and development environments around the world. It is extremely beginner-friendly, fast, and fail-proof. With millions of downloads and opinions left by users from all around the globe, the developers have decided to release their newest version of the environment. While mostly advanced users will appreciate the full functionality of Arduino Pro IDE, all of the important functionality of the old Arduino still remains the same and can be used by beginners too.

Arduino Pro IDE main features

The most important features of the new development environment are:

  • a new and improved development environment
  • Dual mode, classic mode (identical to Arduino IDE), and Pro mode with system file view
  • A new library manager and board manager
  • A board list
  • Basic auto-completion
  • Git integration
  • A serial monitor
  • Dark mode

But that’s not all! The new architecture also makes it possible to implement some of the solutions that the community has wanted for years, including:

  • Arduino Create Editor integration
  • Debugger
  • Third-party plugin support
  • Support for languages other than C++

The new development environment also makes use of various innovative technologies, including:

  • The daemon mode of Arduino CLI provides all basic functionality of Arduino
  • The application frontend is based on the Eclipse Theia Open Source IDE
  • Web technology integration thanks to the Electron framework behind Eclipse Theia.

The latest update is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux64. The developers have asked the community to help them improve the newest edition of the IDE, inviting everyone to leave a comment and state their opinion, as well as report any bugs they may encounter (and you can expect a lot of them in the alpha version). Don’t worry though, the basic Arduino IDE is still available and developed!

You can report all of the bugs you encounter here.
