SwitchBot – what is it and what is it used for?

Reading time: 4 min.

SwitchBot is a company that offers numerous solutions in the smart home category. What products can be found in the brand’s range?

SwitchBot company - from Kickstarter to global smart home device manufacturer

SwitchBot
is a relatively young manufacturer – its history dates back to 2016. It is one of many companies in the robotics and automation space that started with a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The main goal from the outset was to develop robots that provide daily support in the home, performing tasks such as turning lights on and off or closing and unclosing curtains. In 2017, the goal of the Kickstarter campaign was reached, and the first SwitchBot signature devices saw the light of day.

A year later, the company began making its offerings available on Amazon, quickly becoming one of the bestsellers in the category of
smart home
. In the same year, the decision was also made to expand into other markets – including Europe and Japan. The following years brought further development of the company, and at the same time the emergence of many interesting devices: both robots and equipment for controlling SwitchBot products. The brand’s most popular offering is the SwitchBot Curtain robot, which allows automatic control of curtains on a rail.

Devices available from SwitchBot

Product overview
SwitchBot
continues to grow – the company’s product range already includes not only robots, but also motion sensors, solar panels or Wi-Fi gateways. This allows users of the brand’s solutions to create a complete, functional ecosystem that truly improves the quality of life on a daily basis. At the same time, it is worth noting the attractive prices of the company’s equipment – the robots are priced at approx. PLN 300, and other accessories are available in amounts ranging from PLN 80-150. This makes preparing your own smart home system even simpler and more accessible than ever.

SwitchBot intelligent robots to control curtains

The manufacturer’s flagship device is the SwitchBot Curtain robot, available among others. U Rail 2 and Rod 2 Rail versions. The former allows remote control of curtains on U-shaped ceiling rails, while the latter allows operation of curtains hung on a curtain rod. Both models support Bluetooth connectivity, so they can be controlled from a mobile app.

How does the SwitchBot for curtains work? The device is mounted with hooks that allow it to “grab” curtains or drapes. Its design includes small wheels that allow it to move along the rail or curtain rod. Sliding and pulling apart can be done in several ways:

  • after selecting the appropriate option from the mobile app,
  • Using a remote control (sold separately),
  • using the voice assistant (supported options include Google Home, Alexa and Siri – you will also need the SwitchBot Mini Hub for this),
  • When motion is detected – if the user moves the curtain by approx. 5 cm, SwitchBot will do the rest of the work.

On top of that, remote control from anywhere in the world is possible, using the SwitchBot Mini hub. The Bluetooth range is 80 meters, and despite its small size (the device weighs 135 or 285 g, depending on the version) the load capacity is as much as 8 kg. A full charge of the battery allows for up to 8 months of operation, which makes using the SwitchBot very convenient. In addition, SwitchBot is equipped with a light sensor that allows it to automatically close and open curtains or drapes after dark.

Smart button to control

One way to activate the curtain robot is to use a smart remote control
SwitchBot Remote
. It’s a small device with two buttons that can be programmed via a mobile app. This product uses Bluetooth 5.0 technology to achieve up to 4 times longer transmission range.

Solar panels

How to combine home automation with ecology? It’s very simple – just bet on power from renewable energy sources. SwitchBot offers a Solar Panel dedicated to SwitchBot Curtain robots. With its use, you can completely bypass the need to charge the robot – just a few hours of sunlight a day can power the device for 24 hours.

Motion sensors

Another option for controlling SwitchBot devices is the
Motion Sensor
. The equipment uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology and can perform various motion detection functions. One of them is to send an alarm or notification to you when motion is detected, so you can avoid various threats even when you are away from home.

Wi-Fi gateways for robots – SwitchBot Hub

Wi-Fi/IR gateways are also an important part of SwitchBot’s offerings. The Hub Mini allows you to control the curtains over Wi-Fi, making it possible to operate the robot from virtually anywhere in the world. It is worth noting that an unlimited number of SwitchBot hardware can be connected to the gateway.

Why should you bet on SwitchBot?

SwitchBot
is a company that has quickly gained popularity in the space of
smart home
primarily due to the convenience of its devices, seamless integration between different equipment and very reasonable prices. This makes it much easier to create a smart home system. Buying SwitchBot devices can realistically improve the quality of everyday life – remote control of curtains saves a lot of time, and Wi-Fi support also increases security when you are away from home.
