What is a Windows 98 emulator?
Contrary to popular belief, older operating systems can still enjoy considerable popularity among many enthusiasts. However, their native running on modern computers is practically impossible due to outdated drivers, lack of official support and incompatibility with the current architecture, in which the processor was made.
This problem can be almost completely solved by Windows 98 emulator. It is a specialised software, which task is to simulate conditions in which the given system worked in the past. Emulation usually takes place in a completely virtual environment, which, if necessary, allows a quick return to the main operating system.
With just a short configuration, Windows 98 emulator can almost 1:1 replicate the hardware of the era, running on fully modern computer components. For example, it is possible to force the system to run on a limited amount of RAM and VRAM, and to simulate a specific CPU clock speed.
What is the Windows 98 emulator useful for?
There are many tangible benefits of using Windows 98 – installing software from a bygone era, playing old computer games or having direct contact with one of the first Microsoft computer systems.
The last proposal seems to be particularly interesting. The Windows 98 emulator allows you to immerse yourself in the world from the turn of the 90s and 00s and to take a real trip around the virtual museum of software from the previous era. During the tour, you can meet the famous Office helper – Clippit, and check how B.J. Blazkowicz moved in Doom95 in the original.
Interestingly, a well-configured Windows 98 emulator can also help you connect archaic peripherals – including forgotten floppy disks or vintage fax machines, printers and HDDs. This is great news for people who have retro hardware in their possession!
How do I install an old operating system in a virtual environment?
Without a doubt, one of the simplest patents is the use of virtualization for the installation of Windows 98. Emulator such as Oracle VM VirtualBox provides a giant possibility to configure the emulated virtual machine, which allows you to ensure the highest stability when working with a running system.
QEMU can also be used as a Windows 98 emulator. It is an open-source programme released on the GPLv2 licence and developed for full virtualisation of a digital environment. It is particularly recommended for use on Linux systems.
Software for virtualising operating systems simply needs to be downloaded from a website and then installed on our system. Then, after installing the image of a particular emulated system and its quick configuration, we can work without any obstacles on a system that has not been widely used for a long time and has lost support for commercial applications. This method will work on all modern computers, even the most advanced ones.
Installing Windows 98 – an emulator is not always necessary
Virtualization of the operating environment is actually the most common way to run unsupported operating systems, such as Windows 98. However, installation of the old software can also be done in a native form – you just need to find a computer from the appropriate era.
Despite appearances its age doesn’t have to be the same as OS Windows 98. Installation in host mode, that is with the possibility of booting the system directly from BIOS should be successful even on machines with Intel processors from Core 2 Duo family. However, it will require some persistence and many attempts.
Is it possible to install older Windows on a Raspberry Pi?
The last and at the same time the most interesting way to experience a retro operating system is to install it on a popular Raspberry Pi. Despite the fact that development boards are based on ARM architecture, it is still possible to install Windows 98 on them. Raspberry Pi 400 seems to be the best contender for this task – this minicomputer has an integrated keyboard in US layout, as well as a quad-core 1.8GHz processor coupled with VideoCore VI GPU.
In this case, the key to success is to use DOSBox-X and a Windows 98 image. The installation is based on transferring the image to the Tiny memory and then briefly configuring DOSBox-X for Microsoft.

I have tried Oracle Box before, and it’s hard to set this up. The Windows 7 OS was hard to download without itself damaging and corrupting Windows 11.
