Raspberry Pi Foundation release! A new version of Power over Ethernet HAT, the Raspberry Pi PoE+ HAT, is making a big entrance. We already know that it’s better quality overlay compared to the previous version.
The PoE HAT+ supports 802.3at, will have higher current capacity of 3A* or 5 A* (TBC), a built-in current sensor and uses a planar transformer. Good to see a new member of the Raspberry Pi family.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) describes one of several ad hoc standards or systems that transmit electrical power along with data over twisted pair Ethernet cabling. This allows a single cable to provide both a data connection and electrical power for devices such as wireless access points (WAPs), Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones.
Tech specs
- Input voltage: 37-57 V DC,
- Output Power: 5V DC / 3 A or 5A,
- CPU cooling: 25mm x 25mm brushless fan delivering 2.2 CFM (3.73 m³ per hour) of air
- fully isolated switching power supply,
- fan control,
- Mechanical compatibility with current Raspberry Pi PoE HAT,
- Dimensions unchanged from the previous version.
In light of the long lead time for the original version of the PoE HAT, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has decided to seamlessly launch the PoE+ HAT. While we’ll have to wait a bit longer for stock, the early announcement will allow partners and official distributors, including Botland, to announce upcoming availability as soon as possible. Rest assured – everything has been fine-tuned so that you can continue to enjoy both the PoE HAT functionality and retain access to copies of the previous version of the overlay. This is good news for those who, for whatever reason, don’t plan to switch to the new product or need time to do so. However, it’s reasonable to assume that some third-party enclosures may not fit the new version.
Raspberry Pi PoE+ HAT – when available?
The Raspberry Pi POE+ HAT will be available for purchase starting May 24 this year. For larger batches we will have to wait until the end of June, at least. The older version of the PoE HAT will still be available, although in much smaller quantities (up to about 3.000 units in 2021) and mainly for a group of industrial customers who cannot yet migrate to the new version.
