New YouTube video quality. The latest Raspberry Pi OS update

While the first 64-bit CPU was implemented in RPi 3, the OS remained to be only 32-bit. At least until the end of May 2020, when the developers released a new beta branch of their Raspberry Pi OS 64.

The system cooperates with Raspberry Pi 2 v1.2, which utilizes the same CPU as Pi 3, Raspberry Pi 3, and Raspberry Pi 4. The operating system is still in early beta, but its latest update finally allowed users to watch YouTube videos in 1080p using the Chromium browser. With the system coming to 64 bit, the Chromium browser was also adapted into 64-bit with the latest updathttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD67xfSvQrETo make your Chromium browser compatible and optimized for the Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit, input the following command into the terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

For those who missed the update – you can find all of the relevant information here. The changelog is worth a read, as it also includes a handful of useful changes apart from just improving YouTube video quality.

In addition, the update also brings:

  • The Bookshelf app
  • The Magnifier app
  • User Research questionnaire
  • other changes, including tons of fixed bugs and various tweaks
