The best 3D wall decorations

Interest in interior decoration has several sources. The first of them is the need to better adapt a room to one’s own taste, likes or imagination. The second is the desire to stand out and create a completely unique arrangement, which will arouse envy of friends, and maybe even a wider audience – because social media users like to boast about their decorating achievements online. In the case of commercial buildings (retail or service), 3D wall decorations additionally gain an image dimension. The more recognisable a place becomes (e.g. a restaurant or a club), the easier it is to advertise it among potential guests.

In which technologies are 3D wall decorations made?

One of the most common methods of producing wall decorations in a modern style is laser cutting. It ensures very precise representation of all design details and allows to obtain smooth edges. The cutting is also done by means of CNC machine tools, i.e. computer-controlled, which allows for complete automation of the production process. As a result, the finished 3D wall decoration can be sold at a much lower price than if it were produced by hand in individual pieces.

Decorations of this type are cut out of many materials: the most common are Plexiglas (i.e. acrylic sheet), PVC, and also wooden plywood or thin wooden boards. The richness of colours of Plexiglas and PVC, as well as the effect of wood, mean that none of these materials require additional treatment in the form of lacquering or painting.

How to produce 3D wall decorations at home?

Thanks to 3D printing you can create wall decorations of any colour and shape

It is worth remembering that small decorative elements can also be made on your own – on a small, home CNC machine. Another possibility, definitely easier to realise for a wide circle of makers, is to print a three-dimensional decoration for a wall on a 3D printer. The great popularity of small and inexpensive devices working in the FFF/FDM technology means that a wide range of people have their own ready workshop, where they can print creative letters or shapes a few or even several centimetres thick.

Such a construction will look interesting as a wall decoration – especially if for its printing you will use the filament of unusual colour or, for example, two colours of filament at the same time. Of course, to realise the latter idea you will need a printer equipped with a dual print head or the functionality of alternate drawing of the filament from two (or more) spools.

Original lettering as wall decoration

Probably the most popular 3D wall decoration at the moment are various inscriptions. Depending on the concept, single words – such as “home” or “happy” – or entire slogans. Quotes or mottos in different languages are also becoming increasingly popular. When decorating private areas, such as a marital bedroom or a child’s room, you may be tempted to use the names of your household members as inspiration for decorating your home.

Graphic themes – abstract or realistic

A 3D wall decoration in the form of a graphic theme can be an equally interesting inspiration. In this case there are two paths. The first one draws handfuls of inspiration from nature and the world around us. In the role of wall decorations there are, for example, plants, animal silhouettes, maps, outlines of characteristic buildings.

The second variant includes geometric and abstract themes. In this case, designers like to use patterns imitating mosaics or tiles, openwork forms with a complex pattern, or even shapes referring to optical illusions. Depending on the taste of the future occupants, the effect of harmony and cosiness can be achieved in the room – or on the contrary: associations with energy, modernity and even a certain extravagance can be emphasised.
