VR 3D videos – take your movie to 3D

Reading time: 2 min.

What are VR 3D videos?

VR 3D films are understood to be video content that has been shot with a view to being subsequently displayed on special virtual reality goggles. These provide the viewer with the ability to fully control the exposure of the scene. All the viewer has to do is turn his or her head in the direction of interest.

However, these unusual possibilities offered by 3D films for VR glasses also require the use of appropriate video recording equipment. An ordinary camera will not suffice here – instead, you will need specialised spherical recorders capable of recording images in a 360° field around the operator.

What benefits do VR 3D films provide?

Although at first glance VR 3D movies seem to be just a temporary trend, there’s no denying the possibilities they provide for the skilled cinematographer.

Shots recorded by spherical cameras allow you to capture the film set from every possible perspective – great for dynamic action scenes, and 3D movies shot with VR glasses allow the viewer to become the main protagonist of the cinematic story.

Using the VR glasses

Another advantage that VR 3D films bring is the ability to fully capture the events surrounding the operator. This makes it possible to capture every detail, even the smallest, which can play a key role during the production of documentary and photojournalistic content.

The artistic aspect cannot be overlooked either. VR 3D films can tell a story in a completely novel way. When a spherical recorder is placed on a long selfie stick, it becomes possible to record video from an interesting perspective that resembles moving around the globe.

In this case, the main character is still in focus, but the surrounding image is artificially rounded, giving the impression that the protagonist of the VR 3D video is on a small planet.

How to shoot 3D movies for VR glasses?

To be able to create VR 3D movies, you will need the aforementioned spherical camera. Different variants of this device can be found on the market – some are equipped with several evenly spaced lenses, while others consist of just two optical sensors.

The first solution offers noticeably better quality, and the recorded VR 3D movies have practically no artefacts between combinations of frames recorded by individual lenses.

Unfortunately, the use of several optical sensors significantly complicates the entire construction of the spherical recorder, which is much more susceptible to all kinds of mechanical damage. In addition, one has to reckon with a much greater appetite for electricity and, consequently, shorter battery life.

The second variant are spherical cameras consisting of only two lenses. The videos they record can, in some conditions, generate slightly more noticeable transitions between the image captured by the first and second lenses. Fortunately, this only has a minimal effect on the quality in which VR 3D movies are recorded.

The solution using two optical sensors is most often found in the case of small sports cameras. Their small size allows you to easily mount recorders on a helmet, gimbal or selfie stick, which allows you to shoot VR 3D movies kept artistic and yet extremely dynamic character.

3D movies for VR glasses are not at all difficult to work on!

Many amateur filmmakers, seeing the effects provided by VR 3D videos, are afraid that they will not be able to cope with their subsequent processing at home. Fortunately, these fears are completely unjustified – content shot in 360 degrees can be edited in most popular audio and video editing software!
