A marten repellent – What is it and what is it used for?

Reading time: 3 min.

A marten and rodent repellent is a group of devices that generate ultrasonic sounds that are particularly troublesome to these animals. In this way, they effectively deter pests.

Harmful effects of martens and rodents

A group of weasel-like animals (we include martens among them), although they live in the wild, often venture into the vicinity of households. Unfortunately, the activities of martens are harmful, as they prey on livestock (including poultry) and nest in attics, making losses. Another problem is the damage associated with overtaking electrical installations (domestic and automotive). Martens often get under the hood of a car and bite through not only the electrical cables, but also the ignition, brake and cooling lines.

Even seemingly minor damage can contribute to serious situations on the road, threatening the life and health of the driver, passengers and other road users.

Moose repellent - basic information

To protect yourself from the harmful effects of martens and rodents, it is worth trying electric repellents, whose mode of action is to emit ultrasonic sounds. Martens are known for their highly sensitive hearing. Manufacturers of weasel animal repellent devices use specially selected ultrasonic sounds, which are particularly irritating to martens. Emitting loud ultrasonic sounds characterized by the right frequency is an effective protection against weasels.

The effective range of a marten repellent depends on the specific manufacturer and model of the device. Selected equipment covers a dozen, several dozen or several hundred square meters. Some marten repellents have an effective range of 1000 ㎡ or even 2000 ㎡. This type of equipment is perfect for open areas.

Technical parameters of marten repellents

Devices designed to repel martens can be equipped with one or more speakers (e.g., piezoelectric). With an energy-efficient ultrasonic generator, the repellents require little energy to operate. Low consumption is especially important for devices designed for continuous operation.

In addition, selected models are equipped with a module responsible for automatically changing the frequency of the ultrasound generated. Why is it so important? Permanently emitting ultrasounds characterized by the same frequency can habituate animals and thus reduce the effectiveness of the equipment.

The next important technical parameter of marten repellents is the operating temperature range. For devices mounted inside heated rooms, it is not as important as for repellents used outdoors. It is worth looking for models distinguished by the widest possible operating temperature range, such as -30°C to +70°C. Devices of this type ensure stable and reliable operation both in hot summers and during cold winters.

Other parameters of the repellents

Moose repellents designed for outdoor use should be distinguished by their resistance to weather conditions. A good example is devices equipped with an IP65 (or higher) rated enclosure. Detractors of this type are protected not only from moisture and contamination, but also from access to hazardous parts using wire.

Moose repellents can be mains-powered directly from the home electrical system of 230 V AC or from a 12 V car installation. When installing the device in the car (for example, under the hood), choose a place not exposed to high temperatures. In addition, the repellent must not be installed on moving parts.

Another key technical parameter of devices designed to repel weasel animals is the mentioned power consumption. The most common equipment of this type has a power requirement of tens of milliamps (e.g. 30 mA). Reading the description of the deterrents, it is worth paying special attention to the diameter of the speakers. Models with speaker diameters greater than or equal to 40 mm are a good choice.

Angle of action and physical dimensions of marten deterrents

What else to pay attention to? On the angle of the device’s operation. The larger it is, the more omnidirectional the deterrent is characterized by. The last parameter is the physical dimensions. A marten repellent is mostly a compact device, whose width, height and depth do not exceed 10 cm. Selected manufacturers offer sets consisting not only of the main unit and power supply, but also of additional mounting accessories.

Some deterrents generate not only ultrasound, but also optical signals. The built-in LEDs emit a harsh, blinding light that, combined with annoying sounds, effectively repels weasel animals.

Advantages of animal repellents

The marten repellent, despite generating very unpleasant sounds, is completely safe for animals. The principle behind this type of equipment is to discourage weasels from staying in a given area (within range of the equipment). When choosing a particular model, it is worth paying attention to the lack of interference from radios and electronic equipment within the range of the marten repellent. Most models on the market do not act as a deterrent to dogs and cats.

Marten repellent - application

Devices designed to deter animals (including martens) are installed in cars, garages and parking lots. Other places for installation are attics, summer houses, gardens, warehouses and outbuildings. Networked marten repellent is perfect for gardens, orchards and grocery stores.

Where else can you find equipment of this type? First of all, in public places. The repellents not only eliminate the harmful effects of weasels, but also contribute to easier maintenance of cleanliness in public areas.
