Uuu… a serious topic. Building a robot or RC car hardly sounds like something for everyone. Today we’re going to come down to earth and skip the specialised laboratories straight out of utopian, or even dystopian science fiction. Why? Because anyone can build a robot entirely from analogue components or buy a starter kit from scratch. Understanding how to build your own robot is also a great way to learn electronics and computer programming. With help comes the reliable Arduino platform.

Building your first robot with the L298 Ardumoto Shield powered – overlay for Arduino, motors and wheels SparkFun KIT

On the subject of building your own robot, the US-based SparkFun does not disappoint. Available from Botland, the L298 Ardumoto Shield robot build kit based on an Arduino board includes two motors with wheels, an L298-based controller in the form of an Arduino overlay, and the necessary wires and connectors.

The solid foundation of the kit, the L298N controller, is a well-described module that is used in numerous electronics and robotics projects. The Ardumoto overlay itself is therefore a simple to use two-channel DC motor controller based on the L298 H-bridge. With it, we can control two motors with a current consumption of up to 2 A, and it is powered from the V IN pin of the Arduino board. It uses pin 2 to select the direction and pin 3 to generate the PWM signal for channel A and pins 4 and 11 for channel B respectively.

Our successful partnership with Totem Maker has already brought great results. The presented kit, found in the advanced robots section of Botland’s shop, is a collection of elements enabling you to create your own laboratory set. The whole platform is actually learning electronics, programming and a field for conducting experiments.

The construction made of Totem bricks ensures simple assembly and orderly connections of the components. The heart of the kit, TotemDuino module with legendary ATmega328 microcontroller, resembles Arduino UNO – based on the microcontroller, we can work using universal Arduino IDE environment.

For dessert – your own robot not necessarily with Arduino

Not only Arduino maker lives. We encourage you to visit not so long ago created category Create a robot. Numerous kits and functionalities, various components, possibilities for own modification, and all this served in an educational and maker character – surely everyone will find something for himself. If you got interester by the topic, see other articles on about building robots and vehicles our Blog. See you in the robotics workshop, and maybe in the future at robot competitions with your participation!
