PT100 temperature sensor - Universal probe for measuring high temperature
Platinum temperature meters are extremely versatile transmitters of this physical size. The probes use platinum thermoresistors as a temperature sensor, so they can operate in a very wide temperature range. Basically, the thermoresistor itself is designed to operate in the range from -200°C to 800°C , however, the resulting operating temperature range of such a probe is also influenced by the housing, cables and other elements used. Select models may offer a lower maximum operating temperature.
Since the change in resistance through a platinum sensor is a well-characterized physical process, these types of meters are highly precise. PT 100 is one of the most popular purchases among electronics enthusiasts. The materials used to produce the probe guarantee long service life and repeatability of the probe measurements.
Platinum resistance thermometers
PT sensors are a series of platinum temperature meters that use platinum thermoresistors as transducers of temperature into an electrical value, in this case resistance. For most metals, the change in resistance as a function of temperature is linear, making them excellent sensors for measuring this physical quantity. The PT series consists of PT100, PT500 and PT1000 probes. The number in the name indicates the resistance of the sensor at 0°C. Despite the use of an expensive metal - platinum - these probes have a low price because they contain small amounts of this metal.
PT100 sensor - Wide range of measured temperatures
Most metals are highly resistant to temperature extremes, making them good probes for measuring them. Platinum is no different here and probes made of this metal can measure high temperatures, up to several hundred degrees, if the sensor is properly made. This, of course, affects the price of such a temperature transmitter, which is why meters that operate in a smaller temperature range are most often found, which can make them cheaper. For their production, e.g. stainless steel can be used. It is worth remembering that selected models require calibration for proper use.
Linear characteristic for easy measurement
Since the change in resistance as a function of temperature is linear for metals, PT100 transmitters also have linear characteristics . This is extremely important when implementing this type of sensors, because it eliminates the need for complex conversion of electrical value into temperature. This reduces the price of the entire PT100-based meter. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the entire range of sensors section, where you can find, among others: accelerometers , distance sensors , humidity sensors and many others.
Electronic commissioning modules for PT100
In our store, in addition to the PT100 probes, you will also find complete transducer or amplifier modules. These modules are intended for connection to development and development boards, which greatly simplifies the construction of a prototype that uses a temperature sensor, e.g. to control a heater or other processes. PT100 temperature probes - FAQ
Pt100 is a resistance thermometer, a temperature probe made of platinum (hence the chemical symbol Pt before the number) with a resistance value of 100Ω at a temperature of 0 °C. In an inert atmosphere, platinum can be used up to 1000 °C, however Pt100 is used in the range of -200 to 800 °C. A particular sensor often has a lower maximum temperature due to the different materials used.
Pt1000 is a sensor , whose resistance at 0°C is 1000Ω. The distorting effect of resistance in the leads will be less significant than with Pt100 because it contributes to a lower percentage of resistance compared to the circuit. The Pt100 probe has lower resistance and therefore less stress on the wires.
The Pt100 probe uses platinum thermoresistors. The key to the concept of Pt100 operation is the concept of resistance - it measures temperature by using the change in resistance to determine the temperature value. For Pt100, the resistance at 0°C is 100Ω and at 100°C 138.5Ω, therefore the change in resistance per degree Celsius is 0.385Ω.
