Transmitter or converter? Nomenclature, similarities and differences
The words "transducer" and "converter", although in English they boil down to the common term "converter", in Polish technical nomenclature are used in different, usually separate contexts. The first of them is most often used to describe systems that convert analog signals into digital (A/C) or digital into analog (C/A) signals. In industrial applications, a transducer is also called a measuring system, consisting - in simple terms - of a sensor and a system that converts the signal into a useful, appropriately scaled value (digital or analog). In turn, the word "converter" is most often used in Poland to refer to logical level shifters (i.e. voltage converters) and interfaces used to connect devices equipped with various communication protocols (e.g. USB - UART converters).
A/D and D/A converters
In this category you will find a number of modules and individual integrated circuits used to convert signals from analog to digital and digital to analog. The former are particularly useful in measurement systems, automation and robotics (for operating sensors with voltage or current output) or devices for monitoring specific objects. In turn, digital-to-analog converters allow you to set specific DC voltages (e.g. to compensate for the offset of the measurement amplifier) and generate AC voltage waveforms of any shape, imposed by a control program executed by a microcontroller (or other controller that supports this type of converter). A/D and D/A converters are an indispensable element of all electronic systems working with both analog signals and digital control.
Voltage converters and digital interfaces
