Multiplexers are advanced electronic components that are found in both digital (now more common) and analog (slightly less common) versions. Due to its mode of operation, it can be said that the multiplexer is a combination circuit used to select one of several available input signals. After selection, the signal is transferred to the device output. The multiplexer is a commutation (switching) system. Thanks to the use of such a device in the electronic system, the number of inputs can be easily increased (e.g. to a microprocessor). The multiplexer has the infrastructure to handle a plurality of connected signal generators (e.g. sensors) with a single control signal which will eventually cause the device to return a single output.
