Even after the most accurate synchronization with the standard, the time indication function will be of no use if we do not provide our device with the ability to maintain power after a power outage from the main power supply or battery. For this purpose, a backup power supply is used, most often in the form of a small lithium battery or a small accumulator. However, the current consumption in the standby mode must be minimal so that the energy is sufficient for a long time. In addition, there is the need to calculate leap years and keep track of the number of days in a given month... This is the task for the RTC .

Always on time with the RTC module ( Real Time Clock)

RTC – i.e. real time clock – is such an important device that more advanced microcontrollers already have an appropriate unit built-in as one of the on-board peripheral systems. Simpler microcontrollers and evaluation boards (including Arduino), but also single-board computers (Raspberry et al.) are not factory-equipped with a real-time clock. In such cases, RTC modules come to the rescue. Small is beautiful

Despite its many functions, an RTC clock is usually a small board, the size of which is primarily determined by the size of the battery or connector used. However, some of the modules impress with their small size, which makes them suitable for use in devices where space is particularly limited. An example of such a clock is the Tiny RTC, whose external dimensions are slightly larger than the diameter of a CR2032 battery. If, due to the use of the device, replacing the battery would be very difficult or impossible, it is worth considering purchasing a module with power supplied by a maintenance-free supercapacitor.

RTC - What is it?

The RTC module, i.e. real time clock, is a device that allows very precise determination of both time and date. The module is an essential element of various electronic devices such as alarm clocks, watches, loggers, as well as control units that are the main element of smart home systems. One of the key advantages of RTC modules (real time clocks) is that they provide current information about both date and time even in the event of a power outage.

Which RTC module should I choose?

A good choice will be RTC modules (real time clocks) from Adafruit. Selected modules are equipped with a popular communication interface in the form of a 12C bus. The RTC PCF8523 I2C, DS3231 I2C - STEMMA QT/Qwiic, FeatherWing DS3231 Precision RTC (RTC clock overlay for Feather) and RTC DS1307 I2C models deserve special attention.
