What are Grove systems?

Grove is modular system for designing and building your very own prototypes of electronic devices. It is well-known for its use of standardized connectors which are mainly Molex and ARK. The system is based on modular blocks that are linked with each other by the use of compatible connectors which eliminates the need for soldering and breadboards. It simplifies the process and makes learning all the more enjoyable while exploring and tinkering with different parts of the Grove system. Thanks to all of this, you can build various functional projects that can look as professional or as quirky as you like.

Generally speaking, Grove system consists of a core, that is a base overlay, and branches in the form of one or more overlays together with a module that is controlled from the base with compatible connectors. Base overlay is usually equipped with a microprocessor, it allows for an easy plug-in with any inlet and outlet of the controlling module. Every Grove module is designed for one specific function only, for example it can control one small button or a more advanced heart rate sensor.

Grove systems are a perfect option for beginners!

With all of the novice users in mind, Seeed Studio developed Grove starting kits that are ideal for those who are taking their first steps in programming and robotics. The kits include: base module, light and temperature sensors, connectors, interface and other accessories. Producers of the series share a list of module compatibility with embedded system platforms. By using Grove Protoshield you can build custom device according to your personalized design, for example an advanced system for measuring voltage, electric current and power. Connectors were specifically designed in order to prevent reverse current which protects the modules from injury.

The one thing that you have to pay special attention to before activating the modules is a voltage of power supply. Voltage that is too high or too low can have a negative impact on how your device works, it can even lead to a system failure. The Grove series is charged with a voltage of +3,3V or +5,0V depending on the individual specification of modules. They are compatible with Arduino and Raspberry Pi - you only have to connect it with a dedicated adapter that is going to enable you to type in commands, for example via the UART or I2C interface.

DIY projects for your home using Grove

With the help of Grove starter kit you can build a lot of home improvements that will make your everyday life easier and more comfortable. For a relatively quick project you can try building a DIY smart monitoring device. It will provide you with a couple of interesting data about your environment such as temperature, level of humidity and soil moisture. It can also record sounds!

If you are looking for something more complicated, why don’t you challenge yourself to make an IoT humidifier? This smart machine can be programmed to sense a current level of humidity and once it assesses that it is too low, it will start the humidification process. Or, if you prefer it that way, it can be controlled manually by pressing a button whenever you feel like air is too dry. All of the data will be recorded and sent to the cloud so that you can have an easy access to it.
