Resistors
A resistor is a passive two-pin electrical element whose purpose is to create electrical resistance in a circuit. In electronic circuits, resistors are mainly used to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, and split voltages. Resistors can also be responsible for the polarization of active elements and the termination of transmission lines.
Generally speaking, resistors are most often used to limit the flow of current. The role of the resistor is to take power and convert it into heat. The whole process uses Ohm's law. Some voltage is deposited on the resistor. The power itself is generated when electric current flows through the element and there is voltage at the terminals. There are many different types of resistors, but for standard products, the principle of operation is more or less the same.
Resistors are available with a wide range of resistance, spanning twelve orders of magnitude, and a wide range of wattages. Depending on the purpose, choose low-power resistors (0.125 W to 0.5 W) or high-power resistors for yourself and your project. There are also heating elements (1000W and more). What are resistors? First of all, resistors are the basic components of modern electronics and the most frequently used passive elements in electronic circuits. Resistors come in different versions as they consist of various chemical compounds depending on a model. You can find resistors in the form of packages that integrate several elements in one housing, and specialized resistors implemented in integrated circuits.
Resistors are manufactured from a variety of resistance materials depending on the requirements of the specific application. Most often they are made of materials such as carbon or metal. The materials are applied to a ceramic backing, resistance wires are used for higher power elements. There are also specialized resistors. This group includes foil resistors, which are characterized by high precision and stability of parameters over time and as a function of environmental conditions. There are different versions of resistors, some are designed for Through-Hole Technology (THT), others for Surface-Mounted Devices (SMD). These products also differ in individual parameters and external chassis.
The most important parameters of resistors
By far the most important parameter of a resistor is resistance. Simply put, resistance is the electrical function of a resistor. While commonly available resistors for non-advanced use are manufactured in the range of more than nine orders of magnitude, specialized resistors are manufactured in the range of up to more than twelve orders of magnitude.
The resistance value relates the current through the resistor to the voltage drop across the resistor. As you can see, Ohm's law works here, according to which the ratio of voltage drop to current intensity is determined by the resistance of a given element. However, these are not all of the resistors’ important parameters.
Next parameter to the resistance is that each resistor has a nominal tolerance specifying the maximum deviation from the nominal resistance value of the real element. Another important parameter is the maximum dissipated power of the resistor. This factor tells you how many watts of heat (a value that is the product of the current flowing through the resistor and the voltage drop across it) that can be dissipated by the resistor. If the latter value is exceeded, the device may fail, so carefully analyze your needs before buying.
Heating resistors
Are you looking for specialized electronic devices? You'll find them in Botland!
High-power resistors that dissipate many watts of electrical energy as heat can be used as heating elements. Heating resistors are characterized by stable parameters that slightly change with temperature, time or voltage. Such devices are shaped to suit their task. One of the important features of heating resistors is easy installation in the device. They are equipped with dedicated mounting holes or with a self-adhesive tape. This type of resistors are mainly used for heating 3D printers and other similar devices and applications.
