CNC - the engine of modern mechanics
The advent of numerically controlled (CNC) machines revolutionized the world of precision mechanics. Today it would be impossible to run a manufacturing company without access to at least one CNC machining centre. The expansion of this type of machines is justified by a number of their undoubted advantages. Very high accuracy and repeatability, the ability to work in multiple axes, automatic tool changing and versatility, resulting from the combination of milling and turning functions are just some of the items in a long list of factors, supporting the use of CNC for both small and large series production. Interestingly, miniature machines, which usually fit on a standard work table and weigh no more than a dozen or so kilograms, are becoming more and more popular. Such devices are sometimes offered with dedicated control software, and some provide compatibility with programs used in full-size machining centers.
Applications for miniature CNC milling machines
Small laser plotters and engraving machines with spindles not exceeding a few hundred watts of power prove to be very useful for work related to surface decoration, creation of permanent markings or small reliefs. Small and precise high-speed milling machines are even used in... printed circuit board (PCB) prototyping - importantly, with chemical etching processes completely omitted. The milling machine enables mechanical removal of copper areas between tracks and solder pads, and in the second pass (i.e. after changing a tool from a milling cutter to a drill) it also enables making all required in a PCB project holes for THT elements, assembly hole vias and others.
