Sensor or actuator? The most important differences

The actuators can resemble sensors in several respects. What is the difference between the two types of these devices? While sensing devices convert an initial physical quantity, e.g. temperature, into an electrical voltage signal, the actuators convert the electrical voltage signal into an appropriate physical process depending on the design and purpose of the device. For a measurement system, the output from the sensor will always be only an input source. Meanwhile, the actuators are triggered differently - through the output signal from the measuring system. Sensing devices that provide input information include, but are not limited to magnetometers, microphones, cameras, buttons, potentiometers. In turn, LEDs, motor drivers, loudspeakers or lasers belong to the group of actuators.

Grove actuators - small, yet practical

You already know actuators if you use more advanced embedded systems with motors in your projects. It is the motors, mainly stepper motors, that are one of the most popular examples of using actuators in practice. This type of motor can be used in devices where the key is to precisely position the object - it may be a robot arm.
