Product description: Gravity - Human Presence Detection Sensor - C4001 - 24 GHz mmWave sensor - DFRobot SEN0610
The C4001 occupancy sensor from DFRobot uses 24 GHz millimeter wave technology and provides a horizontal detection angle of 100° . It offers a presence detection range of up to 8 m and a motion measurement range of up to 12 m . Unlike infrared sensors, the C4001 can detect both static and moving objects, distinguished by its high resistance to changes in temperature and ambient light. Thanks to FMCW modulation, it allows you to measure distance and speed (from 0.1 m/s to 10 m/s), which allows for precise real-time monitoring. It can penetrate materials such as fabrics or glass, making it perfect for various conditions. Equipped with a Gravity interface and I2C and UART communication, it is compatible with Arduino, Raspberry Pi and ESP32 platforms.
The manufacturer has prepared a detailed user guide that makes using the module much easier - check it out!
Main features of the sensor
- Communication methods : supports two communication interfaces - I2C and UART
- Interface : uses the Gravity interface, which makes it easy to integrate with various platforms
- Human presence detection : presence detection range up to 8 meters, motion detection up to 12 meters
- Distance measurement : measurement range is from 1.2 m to 12 m
- Speed measurement : allows detection of speeds from 0.1 m/s to 10 m/s
- High interference immunity : not affected by conditions such as snow, fog, temperature, humidity, dust, light or noise
- Compact size : easy to integrate thanks to its small dimensions
Detection of human presence, distance and speed
Compared to other types of occupancy sensors, such as infrared sensors, the C4001 occupancy sensor using millimeter waves has the advantage of being able to detect both static and moving objects . It also has a high resistance to interference, making it less susceptible to temperature changes, differences in lighting, and ambient noise. Whether a person is sitting, sleeping, or moving, the sensor detects their presence quickly and precisely. The C4001 occupancy sensor uses FMCW modulation to measure distance and speed . Its maximum detection range is 12 m, and the speed measurement range is from 0.1 m/s to 10 m/s.
FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave)
FMCW modulation is a radar system that emits a continuous series of signals with changing frequencies and receives the reflected signals. This allows the measurement of distance, speed and angle . Compared to pulse radars, FMCW radar allows continuous measurement of distance and precise determination of the speed of objects, which makes it is ideal for tracking movement. Additionally, it offers high resolution measurements and does not require waiting for echo signals to return , making it an excellent solution for real-time monitoring.
Sensor installation methods
The millimeter wave occupancy sensor is sensitive to mounting, and improper placement can negatively impact its performance and functionality. There are four common methods for installing this module:
- Top mounting : the sensor is mounted on the ceiling, allowing for a wide field of view and effective detection of presence from above
- Bottom mounting : placing the sensor at the bottom of the room can be useful in situations where detection of presence close to the floor is required
- Horizontal installation : installing the sensor horizontally provides detection in different directions, which is beneficial in large rooms
- Canted mounting : allows the sensor to be pointed downwards, ideal for monitoring areas with a defined coverage area, providing better detection in the selected direction
Each of these methods has its own applications, so it is important to adapt the installation method to the specific needs of the application.
