Product description: ISO1640 - bidirectional I2C isolator - JST SH 4-pin - 3 - 5.5 V / 2.25 - 5.5 V - Pololu 5391
Pololu I2C isolator with galvanic signal isolation, based on TI ISO1640 , enables bidirectional I2C communication between two devices with clock stretching support. The module has JST SH 4-pin connectors, compatible with SparkFun Qwiic and Adafruit STEMMA QT systems, which makes integration easy. Isolation protects devices from damage caused by potential difference and interference, and each side of the module is powered separately with a voltage ranging from 3 V to 5.5 V (VCC1) and from 2.25 V to 5.5 V (VCC2) respectively.
Main features of the insulator
- Galvanic signal isolation : safe separation of SDA and SCL lines between two devices
- Bidirectional I2C communication : SDA and SCL signal support with clock stretching function
- JST SH 4-pin connectors : compatible with Qwiic and STEMMA QT systems
- Separate power supply for both sides : 3V to 5.5V (VCC1) and 2.25V to 5.5V (VCC2)
- High transmission speed : up to 1.7 MHz
- Compact dimensions : 10.16 x 15.24 x 7.1 mm, weight 0.6 g
- Fault-proof isolation : no ground connection (GND1 is not connected to GND2)
Module pins
The module has two separate power supplies: VCC1 and GND1 for side 1 (from 3 V to 5.5 V) and VCC2 and GND2 for side 2 (from 2.25 V to 5.5 V). The SDA1 and SCL1 lines connect to the device on the first side, while SDA2 and SCL2 connect to the device on the second side. The connectors are JST SH 4-pin, which allows for quick and easy connection of Qwiic and STEMMA QT compatible cables. The built-in 10 kΩ pull-up resistors are connected to the appropriate voltages on each side. Pay attention to the different logical thresholds of the two sides and make sure that the devices correctly interpret low signals according to the ISO1640 documentation.
Connection and configuration
For correct use of the module, both sides must be powered separately: side 1 with VCC1 and GND1 pins (from 3 V to 5.5 V) and side 2 with VCC2 and GND2 pins (from 2.25 V to 5.5 V). The I2C buses are connected to the SDA and SCL pins on both sides, respectively . For correct operation, it must be ensured that the devices on both sides correctly interpret the signals in accordance with the ISO1640 characteristics. To increase the transmission speed, external pull-up resistors can be added in parallel to the built-in ones.
