Hard drives are by far the oldest devices for data storage. Currently, two technologies dominate: SSD and hybrid SSHDs. If you are creating an alarm system for your home, building an advanced robot or constructing another DIY project such as the Internet of Things, in most cases you will need space to store data. When choosing a disk, be aware of parameters such as disk capacity and write speed.
Portable memory and SD & microSD cards
If you are looking for a portable storage medium or additional space for storing data, you can opt for a microSD or SD card, a USB flash drive (USB stick) or an external hard drive. The proposed microSD cards are supported by most mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets, while SD ports are popular on desktops, laptops and cameras. In addition, remember that the microSD card can be easily connected to the SD input using the appropriate adapter. An important criterion when choosing is capacity. The capacity of memory cards is usually from 8 GB to 256 GB. USB flash memory (pendrive) is an equally popular solution, especially useful for transferring data between devices (it is more resistant to damage than SD and microSD cards, and also has a USB input). The situation is different with the capacity of portable pendrive memories. The capacity of pendrives is usually from 16 GB to 512 GB (although we are increasingly seeing ultra-modern products with even greater capacity!), And the speed of data transfer depends on the interface (USB 2.0 or USB 3.0) and the internal memory architecture. An external hard drive is a less mobile solution, but it provides by far the largest capacity - usually a few terabytes.
FRAM, EMMC and EEPROM memories
When looking for an alternative type of memory, select FRAM, eMMC or EEPROM. What characterizes such memories?
EEPROM is non-volatile memory. EEPROM is one type of read-only memory (ROM). They are used, for example, in laptops for BIOS software.
We also have FRAM memory which also belongs to the non-volatile memory type. It is characterized by very fast writing and reading, high durability of data recording and the device itself (in the order of a billion to a billion number of cycles). The offer also includes eMMc memory. EMMC memories are similar to SSDs. The biggest differences concern the construction of the data carrier. In the case of eMMC memory, the circuit is mounted directly on the circuit board. Within it, flash memory and a memory controller are already integrated.
