The use of a minicomputer in the form of an SoM module in your own device requires the design of a base board that must meet all the requirements of high-speed digital circuits. Routing USB interface paths (especially in version 3.0 and higher), HDMI or Ethernet requires in-depth knowledge of the principles of designing high-speed printed circuit boards with the rigor of signal integrity - the point is to prevent distortion of the waveforms and distortions caused by reflections in data and clock lines. Contrary to appearances, it is not enough to "pull" several paths between the connector (e.g. USB A socket) and the appropriate pins of the edge connector of the SoM module - it is necessary to use impedance control over the entire course of the paths, properly separating them from potentially interfering circuits (e.g. power supply) or finally - matching the length of individual paths with great accuracy, which is to prevent time hazards (after all, the electrical signal "moves" with a certain finite speed). The perfect solution is therefore to use ready-made base plates.
