Module manufactured by Adafruit, enabling communication via the CAN bus . It is compatible with Feather family tiles. The built-in MCP2515 integrated circuit allows communication via the SPI interface, while providing full support for the CAN bus. The board is also equipped with a TJA1051/3 transceiver that converts logic levels for 12 V / 24 V systems. The module is also equipped with a voltage converter that allows it to work with 3.3 V boards without the need for an additional power supply. It is possible to remove the termination of the CAN outputs (120 Ohm) by cutting the jumper located on the top side of the board. In the same way, you can change the connection of the CS and INT outputs (pins 5 and 6).

MCP2515 and TJA1051/3 chips

The MCP2515 is a standalone version 2.0B CAN bus controller, the successor to the MCP2510 . Compared to its predecessor, improvements have been made, e.g. throughput and data filtering. It provides communication with speeds up to 1 Mb/s .

TJA1051/3 is a converter that ensures compatibility of the physical layer of the CAN bus. It has support for 3.3 V / 5 V logic and works with 12 V / 24 V systems that are found in CAN Bus devices. It has a high resistance to electromagnetic interference ( EMI ) and complies with the standards: ISO 11898-2: 2016, SAE J2284-1 to SAE J2284-5.

Pin description

  • H/L: CAN bus transmission lines
  • GND: common system ground
  • TERM jumper: establishes CAN bus termination
  • RST jumper: connects the reset pin of the MCP2515 to the reset pin of the Feather module
  • Jumper CS: Connects the CS pin of the MCP2515 to pin 5 of the Feather module
  • Jumper INT: Connects the interrupt output of the MCP2515 to pin 6 of the Feather
  • CS: MCP2515 chip select chip
  • RST: resetting the MCP2515 chip
  • INT: MCP2515 interrupts
  • SLNT: Enables the TJA1051/3 to sleep
