Cable testers RJ11 and RJ45
These small and relatively simple devices turn out to be invaluable help both when setting up a network "from scratch" and during work on its expansion, and even during diagnostics of failures. The testers' principle of operation is based on shunting consecutive combinations of LAN cable lines with the use of an electronic switch (commutator) that feeds the pairs of wires one after another, in automatic or manual mode. At the other end of the tested cable there is connected a small receiver, equipped - similarly to the transmitter - with a number of LED diodes that allow to visually check continuity of the wires. Some testers are equipped with features that allow to test not only cables with RJ45 and RJ11 connectors, but also coaxial cables, and even... modern networks equipped with PoE devices.
Crimping tools and patch cordsets
Another group of equipment for every LAN installer are hand tools for making terminations of Ethernet cables. Although in emergency conditions it is possible to prepare cable endings without the use of dedicated tools (e.g. using side cutters or even a pocket knife), it should be remembered that such "home-made" methods carry a high risk of damaging thin insulation of twisted-pair cables, or even the copper wires themselves. That's why you should always use appropriate tools that, in terms of both the size of blades and the fit of individual body parts, allow for very easy, yet consistent with the art of assembly, preparation of cable ends for installation in RJ45 plugs or wall sockets. The patch knives, on the other hand, allow for easy and quick insertion of the wires into the terminals (e.g. in wall sockets) along with automatic trimming of excessively long cable ends.
