DC motors with a double gear – the simplest drive you’re your mobile robots
By far the simplest construction of mobile robots is a wheeled body with two independent drives. If you are able to mount two DC motors, then you can enjoy car-like design. The principle of operation is simple: the first motor is used to drive the robots, and the second DC motor is used to operate the steering wheels.
However, there is a much better solution - mounting two side driving wheels (right and left), which will be driven separately by two separate engines. This solution allows you to control the driving parameters by selecting the direction and speed of rotation. Thanks to this, it is possible to turn the robot in place, and the turning radius is practically unlimited, which works well for line-followers robots, but not only.

Tamiya drive sets – specific DC motors’ sets tailored to your needs
In this category you will find Tamiya 70097 drive sets, which include two 3-volt DC motors with a maximum current consumption of 2.1 A (the idling current is only 150 mA). The engines are equipped with independent and symmetrically arranged gears. Tamiya, a well-known producer of versatile robot construction sets, took into account that robotics enthusiasts often want to set things up their own way. Therefore, you can configure the ratios of both gears yourself by aligning the gears accordingly. With a ratio of 58: 1, you get an output speed of 200 rpm. The torque for this configuration will be 2.0 kg * cm. You can also choose a slower speed (60 rpm), and as a result you will get a very high torque - up to 7.3 kg * cm. Thanks to this, the solution from Tamiya does a great job both in the case of simple line-followers robots, and it will be perfect for more advanced field robots with tracked drives as well. Double gears DC motors – some practical tips
When planning the construction of a robot with DC motors with a double gear, it is enough to provide for two mounting holes. They should be 3 mm in diameter and 50 mm (70097 version) or 60 mm (70168 version) apart. It must be remembered that the output shafts of both types of motor gears have a 3 mm hexagonal cross-section. This ensures full compatibility with the Tamiya 70100 track wheel set and 70111 robot sport wheels.
The applied DC motor drivers with double gears should be able to work with a continuous current of at least 2.1 A. If we do not take care of this condition, the motors may switch off at random moments, and even - in the worst case scenario - to permanent damage to the components.
