A Class D surge arrester, also known as a Type 3 arrester, is a protective device designed to protect electrical equipment against overvoltages occurring in the electrical installation. Its main task is to protect against induced overvoltages that may result from lightning discharges, but at the level of energy distribution inside buildings, i.e. at a lower voltage level than the main power input point. The basic mechanism of operation of these arresters is to rapidly redirect excess voltage to ground (ground), thereby protecting connected devices.
