Lithium-polymer battery construction
The Li-Pol battery is a version of a lithium-ion battery, however, it uses gel and solid electrolyte, while the lithium-ion battery is a liquid version. Its cell was created using only conductive polymers with added metallic lithium. The whole thing was closed in a tightly laminated coating. The solid or gel consistency of the electrolyte makes it retain its original form and does not change its state of aggregation due to external factors. Therefore, it is a safe battery to use with a clearly limited risk of leakage of harmful substances from it. Li-Pol battery consists of one or more cells, which differs from each other. Thus, they must have a different capacity. It belongs to a package in which up to 10 lithium-polymer cells are present.
The most popular in robotics are batteries, consisting of 2 or 3 cells. For easier creation of technically advanced constructions, an extra balancer plug is often used.
What to consider when choosing a Li-Pol battery?
There are several key parameters that determine the application, functionality and matching of the Li-Pol battery to the device. When choosing it, you should pay special attention to them, comparing them with your expectations and design requirements. Important is the battery capacity, which we mark in mAh, and in larger models in Ah. It informs us about how long we will be able to use the battery for the next charge. One of the most important parameters is the number of cells in the battery. The designation is numerical and additionally letter - S or P. There are Li-Pol batteries that combine these two variants. The letter P denotes the cells connected in parallel with each other, while S in series. No less important is the current capacity, which we will know from the C marking. This is the maximum current that can be drawn from the battery. In addition, pay attention to the charging current. This is the maximum current that is needed to recharge the battery. It is a parameter expressed by the formula xC, of which x is a multiplier.
There is still the voltage of the lithium-polymer battery. You have to know that its current capacity is very high, which makes it possible to achieve equally high efficiency. The rated voltage of the cell is always 3.7V, which translates into long operation. The highest possible value is 4.2V and the lowest 3V.
