AA batteries (R6) - fingers are different
Cheap AA batteries , with prices starting from a few dozen groszy each, are most often ordinary zinc-carbon batteries . R6 batteries have a relatively low capacity and are suitable for low-power devices. Low capacity directly translates into short operation time of powered devices. Typical examples of such applications are clocks and alarm clocks (mechanical or with LCD screens) and remote controls.
Alkaline batteries - the most important information
In the case of devices with a current consumption of several hundred milliamps, alkaline sticks will be a much better choice. Products of this type are characterized not only by a much higher capacity, but also by a longer shelf life. For this reason, if we sometimes forget to replace the batteries, it is better to use alkaline batteries which, despite their higher price, will last longer in devices with lower power consumption. In the case of toys powered by electric motors, flashlights or some cameras and radios, the only right choice will be LR6 batteries, an alkaline version of AA batteries.
R6 AA battery - Parameters worth remembering
Most users know the nominal voltage of AA batteries, which is 1.5V. A much smaller percentage of us usually remember about other, equally important parameters. For example, not all batteries are able to operate within a wide enough temperature range. If we are photography enthusiasts and use a camera or accessories (e.g. external flash) that are powered by R6 batteries, it is worth purchasing good alkaline batteries, e.g. from the Duracell Industrial series.
AA batteries - Batteries for professionals
The Duracell Industrial series sticks are perfect for ambient temperatures ranging from -20oC to +54oC, a range that exceeds the operating capabilities of many cameras. Low internal impedance at a frequency of 1 kHz predisposes the batteries to work in applications with high current consumption (also impulse). Please remember that using any type of battery in conditions that exceed the manufacturer's specifications may result not only in limited life and efficiency of the power source, but also with the risk of battery damage. Our store also offers AAA batteries packed in, among others: 4 pieces each, lithium batteries (pills), Li-Pol batteries and many others. If you have any questions or doubts regarding the power source, please contact our advisory department.
AA batteries (R6) - FAQ
In the case of devices with relatively high current consumption (e.g. flashlights , electronic toys, etc.), it is worth choosing alkaline batteries (marked LR03) - they offer higher capacity and lower internal resistance compared to regular R03 (AAA) zinc-carbon batteries. . The latter will be useful, among others: in watches that consume little current but require a long operating time.
Larger AA batteries (R6, LR6) offer significantly higher capacity compared to thinner and shorter AAA cells (R03, LR03). Therefore, whenever possible, when designing a new device, it is worth choosing a power source with a larger capacity, which will allow for a longer operating time under comparable operating conditions.
Nominal voltage of AA batteries (both alkaline and and zinc-carbon) is 1.5 V, although in reality the no-load voltage (i.e. measured at the poles of an unloaded cell) in the case of brand new batteries is slightly higher (about 1.6 V). Of course, the voltage of each battery will decrease as it discharges.
Ordinary zinc-carbon batteries (R6) and alkaline batteries (LR6) should under no circumstances be connected to the charger - this may seriously damage them, and it will not be possible to restore the discharged cells to a usable condition. However, there are NiMH batteries available on the market in the size of an R6 battery - these can be charged and discharged many times.
You can use any multimeter with a voltmeter function or a special battery meter to check the condition of AA batteries. In the first case, the positive pole should be connected to the red wire of the meter, and the negative pole should be connected to the black wire. The measurement should be made in the range of 2 V or more. A voltage of about 1.5 V means the battery is fully functional, and about 1 V means it is discharged. The actual usefulness of a battery at a given voltage depends on the characteristics of the device it is intended to power.
