Both segmented displays and LED matrixes are designed to display a specific image. Segmented displays provide us with information that consists of numbers, letters or special characters. The control system generates two-state signals, allowing you to enter the specific data you want them to display. Also in this way it is possible to read the measurement data. Segment displays are ubiquitous in our everyday life. They can be found in calculators, household appliances, watches, as well as on the operating panels of machines and measuring devices. They are used in street advertisements and boards with scoring or countdown time in quiz shows. Segmented displays differ in the number of characters. We can distinguish single displays, as well as two-, four- and eight-character displays. Seven- and eight-segment displays are most often selected. In addition, we have a wide selection of LED matrixes with a diode resolution ranging from 1x8 to 64x32.

Construction and principle of operation of segment displays
The typical construction of a segment display uses LED diodes , which conduct current when voltage is applied to the pn junction, which is manifested by the illumination of one or more segments. Most often, segment displays are 8-segment, consisting of four vertical or inclined lines and three horizontal lines in the shape of the number 8 and the eighth segment in the shape of a dot. The diodes forming single segments will glow only when a forward bias voltage is applied to them, and the brightness of the segment will depend approximately linearly in proportion to the current flowing through the diode. For this reason, to prevent damage to the display, connect its segments to a voltage source through resistors that limit the flow of current. The color of a segment's light is related to the voltage across the LED that makes up the segment. For the red color, the voltage drop across the diode is approx. 2.0-2.2 V, while for the blue color it is approx. 3.6 V. For a standard, single 8-segment display composed of red LEDs, the current consumption is approx. . 15 mA per segment - taking into account that the display will be controlled by an integrated driver operating at TTL level voltages (5.0 V), and the voltage drop will be 2.0 V per segment, referring to Ohm's law and a series of resistors. E96, display segments should be connected to 220Ω resistors. A 7-segment display may also be the perfect solution for your project.
Controlling segment displays using logic circuits
Segment displays can be controlled from microcontrollers, but also in purely hardware form, e.g. using the CD4511 system, which is a 7-segment driver and BCD decoder in one (the system does not support a display segment imitating a dot) to control displays connected internally in a common cathode system. The system is powered by 5.0 V and is equipped with four inputs marked as A, B, C and D and corresponding to bit weights of 1, 2, 4 and 8, respectively. The controller has seven logical outputs, one for each segment. The maximum output current of a single output is 25 mA. By selecting resistors, you can set the intensity of the segments' lighting according to the project needs.
RGB LED matrices - effective and practical
Matrices of RGB LEDs arranged in the form of a two-dimensional array enable the display of various signs, graphic symbols and more! Such boards are found in everyday life, among others: as mosaic displays of advertisements and passenger information. The LED matrices we offer can be controlled with both Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Thanks to the built-in driver, one microcontroller pin is enough to operate the matrix. The RGB LED matrices we offer are available in various row and column sizes, i.e. from 1x8 to 64x32. Thanks to this, using RGB LED matrices, you will be able to diversify the appearance of the operator panel interface and build a board to display cool animations!
Segment displays enable legible display of various types of information, which consist not only of numbers and letters, but also of special characters. The segment display is used, among others, in electronics, household appliances and calculators. Moreover, it is used in street advertising, various types of measuring instruments, electronic equipment and even street advertising. The 7-segment display is one of the most popular among all displays of this type.
Seeedstudio 7-segment displays are distinguished by easy operation, universal use and wide compatibility. Selected models can be successfully connected to a microcontroller Arduino. Adafruit 7-segment displays are also a good choice. Selected models are controlled exclusively via the I2C interface. Adafruit modules require 5V or 3V to be powered.
