RetroPie is a British initiative that aimed to create a coherent and convenient system to allow easy access to old games using minicomputers. In technical terms, RetroPie is essentially a system overlay that includes a number of emulators that allow you to play titles from years ago. RetroPie - feel the magic of the past!
RetroPie is a non-profit initiative - the creators of the platform make no profit from their work, and the whole thing is sustained by the support that visitors and sponsors (for example, Mythic-Beasts providing free hosting for the site) give to the cause. RetroPie is based on other software solutions, including Raspbian, RetroArch, EmulationStation and Kodi. The software is largely developed by a large community of users who help improve the source code and also provide a sort of "customer service desk" in the form of a forum with technical support.
How does RetroPie work?
RetroPie is a system overlay consisting of several emulators, the code that binds them together and an interface for user interaction. Such an extension is not a standalone operating system (although you can install it before choosing an OS), but it works perfectly with many popular software such as Raspbian or Linux. Apart from games, it is also possible to install add-ons to watch movies, listen to music or upload new skins.
Hardware
To run RetroPie you will need a minicomputer, screen, keyboard or joystick, power supply, a microSD memory card of at least 8 GB, HDMI or RCA cables, an Ethernet or WiFi port and a microSD card reader. The creators of RetroPie do not make hardware or machine building accessories to run their software on. However, on the official RetroPie website you can find recommendations and advice on what hardware will work best - these include kits from Pimoroni, Canakit and The Pi Hut. It is worth remembering that the code is compatible with many different hardware brands. This includes additional hardware that is not necessary to run the overlay. If you do not have a tile, you can also run RetroPie on a regular computer.
