Product description: LED 8mm RGB WS2811 addressed - 10pcs.

Package of ten RGB LEDs, so you can easily add colorful visual effects to your project. The LED contains an integrated driver allowing you to control with one line connected to the microcontroller, e.g.Arduino,STM32orRaspberry Pi. Since each LED has an individual address, multiple elements can be connected on one bus.

Arduino compatible product

Pololu providesa libraryfor Arduino platform users. In the network you can also find Adafruit NeoPixeland NeoMatrixlibraries.

Elements sold in a package of 10 pieces.

Connection

The LED has four outputs, as shown in the picture below. When connected, blue is switched on by default.

Pin Description
5V Supply voltage 5V.
GND The weight of the system.
DIN Control input to be connected to the microcontroller or the previous diode in the chain.
DOUT Optional output to connect another diode.

Here are some tips that may protect your diode from damage:

  • Never connect a voltage higher than 5 V.
  • Connecta capacitorof at least 10 uF between the power pins.
  • Avoid changing the connections when the power is on.
  • Use the shortest possible wires on the control line between the LEDs and the microcontroller.
  • Consider using a resistor between 100 Ω and 1000 Ω on the data line between the microcontroller and the LED to reduce noise and avoid accidental power supply to the LED from the processor pin.

Attention!

Diodes may explode if the supply voltage exceeds the permitted value. Polol's tests show that applying 6V voltage may cause permanent damage to the diode.

Communication protocol

DiodesWS2811are controlled by a simple, fast communication protocol. The default state of the bus is 0 V (low state). In order to switch on colours, a series of pulses must be transmitted, where each high state is one bit: short pulse (0.35 μs) - zero, long pulse (0.9 μs) - logical one. The interval between successive rising edges should be 1,25 μs. After transmission of the sequence, the line remains low for 50 μs.

The colour is transmitted in three RGB numbers (red-green-blue). The brightness of each colour is coded in a series of transmitted 8-bit, where the most significant is transmitted first. This means that 24 bits must be transmitted to encode the full colour. The first sequence concerns the diode closest to the microcontroller and the second one in the chain etc.

The protocol used allows to quickly update the status of many LEDs in the chain.Arduino library, created by Polol company, allows to change state of 30 LEDs into 1.1 ms sequences. After setting the appropriate color, each diode will hold it until a new sequence is sent or until the power is switched off.
