Embedded systems are ubiquitous today and have come to dominate electronic devices in every industry for good. It is hard to imagine modern household appliances, consumer electronics (not to mention mobile devices) or even the dashboard of a new car without a touch screen or intuitive operating system. Embedded systems have also taken the measurement equipment market by storm. An interesting example, combining a minicomputer with a laboratory instrument, is Red Pitaya. This small minicomputer can successfully perform many roles: digital oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, function generator, LCR meter or calibrator.

Minicomputer manufacturer

The Red Pitaya brand spun off from Instrumentation Technologies Inc. in 2013 and became an independent company. While her parent company specialized in particle gas pedals, she went on to design high-performance computers with dimensions of no more than a few cm. Interestingly, funding for the development of Red Pitaya was raised through crowfunding. On the Kickstarter platform, the project has received more than a quarter of a million dollars, although its creators assumed funding at the level of "only" about 150 to 200 thousand dollars.

A module with great possibilities

The Red Pitaya board works under the control of the Linux operating system, but in contrast to the well-known single board minicomputers (SBC) like Raspberry Pi, it can use dedicated applications that act as virtual measuring instruments. The combination of a fast analog-to-digital chip with a powerful processor gives the Red Pitaya the ability to be used as a portable electronics lab that fits in your pocket. The measurement functions and real-time signal generation here are the responsibility of the FPGA matrix, working together with the integrated ARM Cortex-A9 core - all housed in a single SoC chip - the Xilinx Zynq 7010.

Comprehensive equipment

Red Pitaya includes four high-quality SMA slots for measured and generated signals, as well as a built-in micro SD card slot and LAN network interface. It provides as much as 512 MB of DDR3 RAM. It also features IDC standard expansion connectors. The board is software compatible with powerful R&D environments such as MatLab and LabView. It can also operate as a software defined radio - Software Defined Radio (SDR). The minicomputer's developers provide support for Windows, Linux and iOS. Ready-made applications for RedPitay are available in the Bazaar marketplace. In the store you can find both the board itself and a broader StarterKit with power supply, memory card and Ethernet cable.
