What is an e-paper?

e-paper displays use electrophoretic microcapsule technology to display an image: charged particles suspended in a transparent liquid move to the sides of the microcapsule when an electric field is applied, making the microcapsule visible by reflecting ambient light, just like traditional printed paper. The e-paper display clearly displays images/text in lamplight or natural light, requires no backlight, and has a viewing angle of nearly 170°. This type of display is usually used in e-book readers because of its paper-like effect.

Pinouts of the e-paper display module

The e-paper display module has a socket for direct connection to the Raspberry Pi Pico. It uses such pins as:

  • VSYS - input voltage (default)
  • 3V3(OUT) - input voltage
  • GND - ground
  • GP8|e-Paper_DC - data / command pin, high for data, low for commands
  • GP9|e-Paper_CS - pin for SPI chip selection, activated by low state
  • GP10|e-Paper_CLK - SPI SCK pin
  • GP11|e-Paper_DIN - SPI MOSI pin
  • GP12|e-Paper_RST - external reset, activated by a low state

Good image quality. However, you have to be careful because, unlike black and white displays, it does not have a partial refresh, but only a full one that lasts 15 seconds. Suitable for displaying content that changes very rarely.

The display itself is fine. The problem is the libraries available for it. I expected something super easy and universal - and on a good morning I have a problem with, for example, rotating the screen by 90 degrees. It probably can, but it should work right away...
