Display made by Waveshare company based one-papertechnology.Its diagonal is2.9" and resolution is296 x 128 px. The screen works withRaspberry Pi Picomodule. The image is displayed in three colors: black, white and red. It communicates viaSPIinterface. The e-paper technology makes this kind of display suitable for e-book and electronic magazine readers.
The manufacturer provides aproduct wikipage that provides information about the module's pinouts and a user guide.
Touchscreen e-paper display for Raspberry Pi Pico.
Main features of the e-paper display
- No backlight, retains last displayed image for long time after power off
- Ultra low power consumption, power is only required to refresh the screen
- SPI interface
What is an e-paper?
e-paper displays use electrophoretic microcapsule technology to display an image: charged particles suspended in a transparent liquid move to the sides of the microcapsule when an electric field is applied, making the microcapsule visible by reflecting ambient light, just like traditional printed paper. The e-paper display clearly displays images/text in lamplight or natural light, requires no backlight, and has a viewing angle of nearly 170°. This type of display is usually used in e-book readers because of its paper-like effect.
Pinouts of the e-paper display module
The e-paper display module has a socket for direct connection to the Raspberry Pi Pico. It uses such pins as:
- VSYS - input voltage (default)
- 3V3(OUT) - input voltage
- GND - ground
- GP8|e-Paper_DC - data / command pin, high for data, low for commands
- GP9|e-Paper_CS - pin for SPI chip selection, activated by low state
- GP10|e-Paper_CLK - SPI SCK pin
- GP11|e-Paper_DIN - SPI MOSI pin
- GP12|e-Paper_RST - external reset, activated by a low state
- GP13|e-Paper_BUSY - busy status output
