Product description: RS232 Pal - Dual Channel UART to RS232 Converter - MAX3232E - Adafruit 5987
RS232 Pal from Adafruit is a practical solution for RS232 interfaces, ideal for hobbyists and professionals dealing with retro equipment, industrial devices or telecommunications. The board equipped with the MAX3232E chip, allows you to convert UART voltage levels (from 0 V to 3.3 V or from 0 V to 5 V) to the RS232 standard with voltages from ± 6 V to ± 10 V. It supports two duplex channels (RX / TX and RTS / CTS), and its compact size makes it convenient to use. Thanks to the ability to work with a supply voltage from 3 V to 5.5 V and baud rates up to 250 kb / s , it is compatible with most microcontrollers and single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi .
Main Features of RS232 Pal
- Dual-channel UART to RS232 converter on the MAX3232E chip
- Supports RS232 voltages from ±6V to ±10V
- Operates with 3.3V or 5V logic, with power supply from 3V to 5.5V
- Transmission speed up to 250 kb/s

Board pins
Power supply:
- VIN - power supply according to logic (3.3 V or 5 V)
- GND - ground for power and logic
- V+ / V- - positive and negative RS232 voltage rails to be used as reference
Low voltage side (UART):
- T1 / T2 - data inputs from UART (3.3 V / 5 V logic)
- R1 / R2 - data outputs to UART (3.3V / 5V logic)
High voltage side (RS232):
- T1 / T2 - data outputs to RS232 system
- R1 / R2 - data inputs from the RS232 system

Programming RS232 Pal
Compatibility with Python and CircuitPython makes setting up the RS232 Pal quick and intuitive. The board supports a built-in UART module, allowing you to send and receive RS232 data. Adafruit Blinka allows you to use it with computers like the Raspberry Pi, with full GPIO and UART support. Coding is limited to a few lines of Python , and detailed examples can be found in the Adafruit documentation.
