the M5dial is really awesome. The simple installation in hole cut-outs makes the dial quick to install. The large encoder is ideal for many applications. However, only 16 pulses per revolution are recorded. The whole thing has to be programmed in UI Flow 2, which can only be done online. I prefer offline IDE's.

The module is very nice in terms of optics and haptics. The described function is also available - somehow. - The display, touch, and the encoder for the ring are good. The button at the bottom is a bit stiff, if you don't press it right, but it works. Great for menu control. - I was able to use other I2C peripherals via the exposed I2C bus. Since there are not many GPIOs available externally, this is very helpful. - The beeper is nice as feedback, although not very loud. I prefer tones around 4000Hz. There are some points I don't like that cloud the overall impression: - The RFID reader only recognizes very few cards. A MIFARE 1k card is recognized, tags in a smaller form factor (about 3cm in diameter) are not recognized with the same chip. Due to the lack of cards, I cannot perform extensive tests yet, but it seems to be related to the size of the tag and therefore the coil inside. Parameter changes on the RFID chip have not made any difference so far. It also only recognizes the cards when placed directly on the module. - The exposed external I2C interface is actually the first I2C numerically that the ESP has. The second one is used for internal purposes. The practical aspect is that under Arduino, you can use the usual "Wire" instance. However, you should define the pins in "Wire.begin(HAL_PIN_GROVE_I2C_SDA,HAL_PIN_GROVE_I2C_SCL,100000);". - The module uses the M5StampS3 as its "brain". The module directly connects the USB interface to the ESP32-S3, without the usual USB-serial converter. By default, the module uses the "CDC mode" for programming under Arduino (and probably also PlatformIO). I was quite surprised when my application didn't start without being connected to the PC. In "CDC mode," the application on the ESP seems to wait for the connection to the appropriate driver on the PC. You can easily change this in the Arduino environment, then it works without a PC, but then you have to press and hold the button on the M5Stamp when connecting the USB for programming, otherwise the PC won't see the interface... Unfortunately, the GPIO0 pin, which is on the button, is not exposed in my opinion, so I had to unscrew the case every time to access the button on the M5Stamp in which I had installed the M5Dial, so that I could reload the program. This is also not well documented by M5. For those who can live with it: M5Dial is a nice product and can be used in many ways.
