Alarm siren - The louder the better

Depending on whether we are building a home alarm or want to secure our car, it is worth considering choosing the most appropriate siren for the alarm from the very beginning. Its basic parameter is the intensity of the emitted signal. The sound intensity level is given in decibels (dB) - all alarm sirens available in our store are able to generate sound at a level above 100 dB, which approximately corresponds to the volume of an outdoor concert or an ambulance siren. Because the too loud sound of an alarm siren is not only very unpleasant for people in the immediate vicinity of the transducer, but also may cause hearing damage - alarm sirens should be used with caution, especially if it is considered to activate the siren (even for test purposes) in a room .

Noise is not everything

When designing an alarm system using a siren, not only the sound intensity level is important. From the electronics point of view, power supply parameters turn out to be equally important. In most cases, alarm sirens can be powered by 12V DC, and in some cases the range of permissible supply voltages is wide and may include both low voltages - 6V (corresponding to the voltage of four AA batteries connected in series) and slightly higher voltages (up to 14V). This information is always detailed in the product description. Different types of alarm sirens may produce different alarm signals.

Alarm signals and modulated siren sound - what else is worth knowing about them?

The siren's task is not only to announce but also to cancel the alarm. The signals "I cancel the alarm" and "I announce the alarm" are different, thanks to which citizens are informed in a situation, for example, when the Government has ordered the sirens to be turned on. Public address systems also broadcast warning messages, warning of a threat or an air alert. A visual alarm signal, e.g. in the form of an LED signal lamp combined with the emission of voice messages, always has the highest effectiveness, so it is worth using both devices at the same time.

Versatile alarm sirens

The previously mentioned wider range of supply voltages accepted by alarm sirens allows them to be used in devices where the voltage may change significantly during operation - in particular in battery systems. The second important electrical parameter that should be taken into account when choosing a siren for an alarm is power consumption. In most cases it is at the level of several hundred milliamps. Before connecting the siren, make sure that your power supply or battery is able to provide sufficient current to power it.

Alarm sirens - FAQ

The sound of the siren depends on its design and purpose. Popular sirens (used e.g. in alarm control panels) usually have a continuous sound (which can be modulated by an external control system) or an intermittent sound produced by a built-in generator .

The cross-section of the cable should be selected according to the maximum power supply of the siren - the higher it is, the thicker the cross-section of the wires should be. It is also worth remembering the conditions in which a given cable will work - it may be necessary to select a cable resistant to UV radiation, moisture and changing ambient temperatures (heat and frost).

An alarm siren is a type of loudspeaker with a design optimized to obtain sound of the highest possible intensity, but with a relatively narrow frequency band. Electrodynamic structures and those based on piezoelectric transducers are used.

Sirens installed as part of civil defense systems are activated by authorized persons working in centers for notifying the public about threats (e.g. air attacks). Signals used in alarm control panels or fire protection systems are most often turned on automatically.
