Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3 Specifications

The Compute Module 3 (CM3) was released in 2017 and was a big step up from its predecessor, the CM1. The Compute Module 2 never came to fruition. The Raspberry Pi Foundation jumped the numbering from CM1 (2014) to CM3 (2017), probably because the Compute Module 3 was based on the Raspberry Pi 3, so the name CM3 was more intuitive. It featured a quad-core Broadcom BCM2837 Cortex-A53 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. The standard version (CM3) included 4 GB of eMMC memory, while the CM3 Lite variant allowed users to use their own SD card. While retaining a format compatible with the CM1, the CM3 made it easier to migrate older projects, although it’s worth noting that it doesn’t offer built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth—those weren’t introduced until later generations of the RPi Compute Module.

eMMC Memory and Raspberry Pi CM3 and CM3+ Improvements

The main difference between the Compute Module 3 (CM3) variants is the eMMC memory. The Raspberry Pi Compute Module 3+ (CM3+), introduced in 2019, is an improved version of the CM3, but still based on the same Broadcom BCM2837 processor. Plus means a few key improvements. These are better cooling without the risk of thermal throttling, the aforementioned wider selection of eMMC memory, and lower power consumption. The CPU and RAM architecture remain unchanged, and we are still dealing with a 4-core Cortex-A53 (1.2 GHz) and 1 GB RAM.

Non-obvious examples of using Raspberry Pi CM3

Compute Module 3 (CM3) leads the way wherever compact dimensions, energy efficiency and long-term availability are needed. In industrial automation, these are HMI (Human-Machine Interface) interfaces that allow machine control and monitoring of production processes. In retail systems, CM3 powers POS (Point of Sale) terminals, i.e. self-service and payment checkouts. In the signage sector, CM3 supports information and advertising screens for remote content management. In robotics, CM3 is used to control drones and automatic movement systems. Vending machines and vending machines with drinks and snacks will benefit from it. If you are planning to buy CM3 and CM3+, you will also find Waveshare adapters for power supply and work with USB, HDMI, SD, UART and industrial interfaces in this category.
