ESP8266 WiFi module - basic information
The full name of the described device is ESP8266EX, but in practice it is rarely used. The ESP8266 WiFi module is a System On A Chip (SoC). The whole chip contains all the necessary components to communicate over WiFi in the popular 802.11 b/g/n standard. In practice, this means that it can be successfully used to create budget projects with low power consumption. The most important technical parameters of the described module are as follows. The supply voltage is within the range from 4.8 V to 12 V. In turn, the operating voltage of the module ranges from 2.5 V to 3.6 V. During operation, the module consumes an average of 80 mA. The maximum energy required to power the equipment in a rigid performance phase is only 800 mA. The module itself is distinguished by its small physical size. The longer side is 58 mm, while the shorter side is 38 mm.
The ESP8266 module - what else is worth knowing about it?
Updating the module's software can be done both via UART and OTA. The maximum data transfer rate is 72.2 Mbps, so the device can be used to quickly transfer a significant amount of data in a relatively short time. The heart of the module is a Tensilica L106 32-bit processor accelerating to a maximum of 80 MHz. A large number of interfaces ensures versatile use. On board there is the mentioned UART, as well as SPI, IR, 12S, SDIO and 12S allowing wireless communication. In addition, the ESP0266 WiFi module also has general purpose GPIO inputs and outputs and one ADC pin operating from 0 to 3.3 V.
Programming the ESP8266 module via Arduino
The Arduino microcontroller is most often used to program the module. On the web you can find plenty of ready-made examples with detailed descriptions and libraries. Arduino community is huge, users of this platform exchange ideas and solve problems together. For this reason, all people who would like to start adventure with programming ESP8266 module should consider choosing Arduino microcontroller.
Universal ESP8266 WiFi module - practical application
The ESP8266 module with NodeMCU software installed is perfect for the increasingly popular home automation. Of course, it can also be used in smart homes. In such cases, the device will be constantly connected to the home Wi-Fi network and can manage pre-configured devices. For example, the ESP8266 module can be programmed with Arduino to automatically open and close roller blinds. Another common use is to remotely control lighting, so each household member can individually set the light intensity in the room they are in. Another application is cooperation of the module with various sensors measuring for example water or air temperature.
