The Buck-Boost converter manufactured by SparkFun is a voltage regulator of the type step-up/step-down. The board allows you to precisely convert an input voltage between 3 V and 16 V to an output value between 2.5 V and 9 V. Typical output voltages of 3.3 V and 5 V can be set using the switch on the bottom of the board. The SparkFun converter uses the TPS63070 Buck-Boost converter, which takes the input power and adjusts the output voltage up or down to the set output voltage. The manufacturer has also used a custom setting here that allows you to solder a resistor if you need custom voltage values.

In addition to voltage control, the SparkFun Buck-Boost uses a DC/DC converter, which is more efficient than a linear regulator. More efficiency means less energy wasted as heat. With built-in overheat protection and an optional heat sink, the inverter can achieve up to 95% efficiency.

Pinout Description
VIN The supply voltage for the power stage. Can be used to pass power to the rest of the design, or used to set the logic level.
EN Turn on the input. Pull up to turn the device on. Pull down to turn the device off. Default: HIGH through a 10 kΩ pull-up resistor to VIN.
GND Ground. Can be used to set I/O pins to low state.
PS Power Save. Pull down for forced PWM. Pull up for power save mode. In power save mode, the switching frequency adjusts to the most efficient frequency. You can also use a clock signal to synchronize to an external frequency. Default: HIGH through a 10 kΩ pull-up resistor to VIN.
PG Power Good type output with open drain.
VOUT Additional buck-boost converter output.
