What is it and how does a step-up / step-down converter work?
In the simplest terms, a step-up / step-down converter is an energy-electronic converter based on a buck-boost topology. The primary task of this device is to convert DC voltage from the power source into DC voltage for the load. This second output parameter has a greater or lesser value than the input voltage supplied by the electrical source.
Any type of advanced step-up / step-down converter consists of buck-boost converters. The latter, in turn, consist of various semiconductor components. Their task is to switch in the form of a diode and transistor key, capacitors and / or energy storage coils and anti-interference filters. When a given keying transistor starts to conduct energy, then the electric voltage is immediately transferred from the source of this voltage to the coil of the device. In turn, the diode itself, connected with the receiver via an anode, then receives a higher cathode potential. As a result, the latter sub-process is tantamount to its blockage of that element.
Basically, when the keying transistor is turned off, the voltage across the coil drops and causes the coil's magnetic flux to change, causing the current to flow to the receiver and parallel to the voltage-holding capacitor connected to it. The transistor key is controlled by a square wave with variable duty cycle (PWM).
