Converters step-up / step-down

Step-up / step-down converters are advanced electronic devices that are successfully used in various production machines, motors and other applications. Step-up / step-down converters are tools that enable the conversion of DC voltage from the power source to DC voltage with a lower or higher value for the receiver. They can be used to increase and decrease tension levels. The construction of switched-mode power supplies is based on such converters. What is it and how does a step-up / step-down converter work? 

In the simplest terms, a step-up / step-down converter is an energy-electronic converter based on a buck-boost topology. The primary task of this device is to convert DC voltage from the power source into DC voltage for the load. This second output parameter has a greater or lesser value than the input voltage supplied by the electrical source.

Any type of advanced step-up / step-down converter consists of buck-boost converters. The latter, in turn, consist of various semiconductor components. Their task is to switch in the form of a diode and transistor key, capacitors and / or energy storage coils and anti-interference filters. When a given keying transistor starts to conduct energy, then the electric voltage is immediately transferred from the source of this voltage to the coil of the device. In turn, the diode itself, connected with the receiver via an anode, then receives a higher cathode potential. As a result, the latter sub-process is tantamount to its blockage of that element. 

Basically, when the keying transistor is turned off, the voltage across the coil drops and causes the coil's magnetic flux to change, causing the current to flow to the receiver and parallel to the voltage-holding capacitor connected to it. The transistor key is controlled by a square wave with variable duty cycle (PWM).

Step-up / step-down converters – control the current intensity as needed 

Step-up / step-down converters are advanced devices that are used by electronics for more professional DIY projects. Of course, the main field of application of such converters is industry.

Thanks to the step-up / step-down converter, the current intensity can be controlled as needed. So you can change the value of the current intensity to a higher or lower (depending on whether the converter has a step-up function, has a step-down function, or whether it has both of them). It is worth knowing that the design and the mathematical apparatus describing it show that the output voltage in the buck-boost converter depends on the width of the control pulse in a proportional and non-proportional manner. This type of step up / step down converters will be useful in any advanced electromechanical workshop.
