How does a step-up converter work? The principle of operation

The step-up converters offered by the Botland store are in most cases equipped with an output voltage regulation system. Step-up converters are very widely used thanks to this feature. There are, for example, their use in projects requiring increased supply voltages of non-standard values.

Understanding how a step-up converter works requires knowledge of basic physical and electrical engineering. A transistor key and a diode are used in the step-up converter circuit. When the keying transistor closes the circuit through the coil and the power source, the diode in the switching circuit goes into the reverse state. This is because the voltage at its cathode is higher than at its anode.

The basic principle of operation in step-up converters is the operation of the coil consisting in maintaining the continuity of the current due to changes in the magnetic field. Importantly - the voltage at the output is always higher than at the input. As the transistor conducts, the current through the inductor creates magnetic field energy. When the switching transistor of the device ceases to conduct, the current flowing from the source through the coil disappears. According to Faraday's law of induction, the previously accumulated energy of the magnetic field is converted into a voltage summed up with the voltage of the source, which supplies the receiver via a diode and charges the voltage-holding capacitor connected to it in parallel. The keying transistor is driven by a square wave with variable duty cycle (PWM). By default, it is assumed that the greater the duty cycle, the higher the voltage at the output of the step-up converter.

Highest quality adjustable step-up converters

The output current is proportional to the ratio of the input voltage to the output voltage, which means that the output current decreases as the output voltage from the inverter increases.

Built-in low-energy transition function prevents unnecessary energy waste. Converters of the U3V70X group are available in a version with a rigid output voltage in variants from 5.0V to 15.0V and in a version with precisely regulated output voltage in variants from 4.5V to 20.0V, using a 12-turn potentiometer.
