A slide switch is an electronic element that has a very wide range of applications. The type of switch determines its use. This element is used in many everyday devices - including radios, TVs, fans, speakers and razors. It can function as an ON/OFF switch, where, depending on the position, it closes or opens the electrical circuit, or switches between various functions of the device (this is how, for example, the air flow control in a hair dryer works). In the specification, the manufacturer usually includes a simplified construction diagram and specifies the important features of the switch - it is worth paying particular attention to the voltage and current carrying capacity of the contacts, pinout grid and contact configuration, as well as the minimum and maximum operating temperature. Another important parameter is the max contact resistance. Moreover, when choosing a slide switch, its physical dimensions should be taken into account.
What should you pay attention to when choosing a slide switch?
Before purchasing a switch for your project, it is worth determining what its features and technical parameters should be. The basic issues include the number of stable positions (usually two or three), the switching method (ON/ON, ON/OFF, ON/ON/OFF, etc.), the pinout grid and body dimensions, as well as the assembly method (through-hole technology, mounting per screw, etc.), contact load capacity, electrical resistance of contacts and insulation, and maximum switching current (intensity). It is also worth paying attention to the location of the slider (on the side or top of the body) and the material from which the slider switch is made. This is especially important if the device is to be operated in difficult conditions (e.g. at high temperature).
