Universal carbon resistors
If you are beginning your adventure with electronics and you are at the stage of collecting elements necessary for creating your first prototypes of devices, you certainly cannot forget about resistors.
Thanks to these elements you will be able to build simple circuits with just a few elements (e.g. a light emitting diode controlled by a monostable button) and later more complex systems (e.g. an astable multivibrator using two transistors that alternately blink LEDs).
Resistors in electronic filters
One of the simplest applications for resistors is to use them together with capacitors to build simple frequency filters.
For example, if we want to remove noise below 150Hz from our circuit, then the simplest way is to combine a 47kΩ resistor with a 22nF capacitor into a first order low stop filter topology at the input of the signal to our circuit.
