The idea of sustainable development has also intensively entered the world of electronics. And what better can both professional engineers and amateur electronic engineers do for our planet than to effectively use existing devices and components for the needs of subsequent projects? Probably these were the assumptions of Gianluce Martin - one of the founders of the cult brand Arduino - who developed the miniature Jolly module. Seemingly, it is just another development board, compatible with the popular ecosystem, but nothing could be more wrong - Jolly is in fact a hardware "upgrade" for the classic Arduino Uno module.

Arduino on cheering - Jolly Dev in action
The flagship product of Jolly Dev (after all, we can expect that more modules of this type will appear in the future) combines the cult ATmega328PB processor (a miniaturized version of the processor, known from DIP and TQFP housings) and the ESP8285H16 WiFi transceiver, supported by an additional 2 MB flash memory, built-in voltage stabilizer, LED to show the status of the network connection and a miniature SMD ceramic antenna. The board also has a place for a tiny Boot button, and everything fits in dimensions similar to the DIP28 housing - Jolly Dev can therefore take the place of the original microcontroller installed in the socket on the Arduino Uno board (both in the original version and in numerous clones, compatible with the iconic module of the Italian manufacturer).
Benefits of Jolly Dev
An undoubted advantage of Jolly Dev - probably the most important from the user's point of view - is the ability to perform a trivially simple hardware upgrade of existing Arduino Uno boards. Replacing the original microcontroller with a tiny board with a WiFi module allows you to convert the old model of the Arduino kit into a modern IoT platform, in addition with much more Flash memory. Until now, the expansion of the project with network functions required either replacing the entire main module, or adding a special overlay, which not only occupied a significant space above the Arduino Uno, but also took away some of the I/O pins that could be used for other purposes. For people who are close to pro-ecological ideas and the implementation of the assumptions of sustainable development, valuable information will also be the fact that the creators of Jolly Dev took care of very environmentally friendly materials used in the production of the product packaging. In addition to biodegradable and easily recyclable base materials (paper and special plastics), thought was also made about ... the use of non-toxic inks, based on water or compounds of biological origin.
