Arduino Nicla - perfection in a subminiature form
The first glance at the Arduino Nicla series reveals that we are dealing with really advanced electronics. On the one hand, the tiny, multi-layer circuit boards, measuring just 22.86 x 22.86 mm, are designed in a way that the packing density of the elements resembles the most modern smartphones. On the other hand, the range of functionalities offered by the modules is really impressive and includes both applications combining real-time machine vision with support for artificial intelligence algorithms, as well as solutions based on sound processing or multimodal measurements of environmental conditions. Each of the boards also has half-open soldering pads (so-called castellated pads), enabling both soldering of standard 2.54 mm goldpins and mounting on the board of the target device (of course, due to the elements being placed on both sides, it will be necessary to prepare an appropriate cutout for this purpose in the PCB of your own device).
Arduino Nicla models
The Arduino Nicla family currently includes three models. The most advanced - Arduino Nicla Vision (ABX00051) is based on a very efficient, dual-core STM32H747AII6 application processor (ARM Cortex-M7 + Cortex-M4), equipped with a 2-megapixel camera supporting TinyML and a 6-axis motion sensor (IMU), MEMS microphone and distance sensor. As if that wasn't enough, the board features a subminiature WiFi/Bluetooth Low Energy module that works with an external antenna connected via the u.FL connector. The design of Arduino Nicla Voice is optimized for neural sound processing (e.g. implementation of ANC functionality, known from top-class Bluetooth headphones), although the powerful AI Syntiant NDP120 processor can also work in many other applications. The Arduino Nicla Sense ME module, on the other hand, is packed with sensors of environmental conditions - it contains a number of high-end sensors from Bosch, responsible for measuring rotation, acceleration, pressure, relative humidity, temperature, air quality and CO2 concentration.
