RTC – i.e. real time clock – is such an important device that more advanced microcontrollers already have an appropriate unit built-in as one of the on-board peripheral systems. Simpler microcontrollers and evaluation boards (including Arduino), but also single-board computers (Raspberry et al.) are not factory-equipped with a real-time clock. In such cases, RTC modules come to the rescue.
