Navigation accompanies man from the first attempts to traverse unknown areas. To this day, sailors use astronomy for orientation in the field. Each age had its own science that was enjoyed by travelers all over the world. The sun, star navigation, the staff of St. James, an astrolabe, an octant, a compass, a deflectometer ... a lot of navigational instruments were created. Today, however, the role of the sun and other stars has been taken over by modern GPS and GLONASS systems. These tools use modern satellite technology (made available by placing satellites in orbit). They will also use ultra-precise electronics and correction algorithms based on the achievements of 20th-century relativistic physics. GPS modules are the future

The main purpose of GPS / GLONASS modules is to precisely determine the location of a given device. Each GPS module informs about the geographic coordinates in which it is located. It is worth knowing that global geolocation systems operate by measuring the propagation time of signals from individual satellites. For this they use very precise atomic clocks. The current time information can therefore be used to synchronize the local real time clock of the device with available universal time standards.

The great advantage of GPS modules and systems is the availability of satellite signals practically everywhere on the globe. There are some imperfections, e.g. local conditions for electromagnetic wave propagation, but generally speaking, GPS reception is practically always perfect. The greater the number of satellites visible to the receiver, the better the tracking accuracy, and as we know - there are more and more satellites.

Arduino and Raspberry Pi GPS modules

In this category, you'll find many universal GPS modules embedded on miniature PCBs, but that's not all. We also recommend ready-made sets from reputable manufacturers. A great example are modules prepared specifically for the most popular embedded platforms: Arduino and Raspberry Pi. For the first one, we have excellent modules from the well-known DFRobot company: DFRobot Shield DB-Io / LTE / GPRS / GPS. This small Arduino Uno-sized board has a GSM module that supports LTE and GPRS networks. Additionally, we have a GPS / GLONASS / BeiDou / Galileo receiver and an integrated BME280 environmental parameter sensor. Thanks to the latter component, you can conveniently measure the ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity. In turn, enthusiasts of Raspberry Pi systems should be interested in the special Waveshare LTE GPS Hat. The device is 100% compatible with the Raspberry Pi 3B + / 3B / 2B / Zero. Waveshare is designed to be self-plugged into a Raspberry Pi. The GPS module also offers GNSS, GSM and NB-IOT connectivity.
